Get ready for college: things you can do

Things You Can Do Now

  • Tell your teachers, family and friends that you plan to go to college.

  • Strengthen your reading, writing and thinking skills.

  • Participate in extracurricular activities, clubs, and volunteer organizations.

  • Find people who can help you. This may be a parent, guardian, family member, older sibling, teacher, school counselor, coach or religious leader.

  • Visit colleges. Attend college fairs. Imagine yourself as a college student.

  • Think about what you like to do and what type of careers interest you.

  • Find inspiration. This could be other people who have made it against the odds or this could be music that is positive and inspirational.

  • Hang out with friends who share your dream of college.

  • Create a support system to help you out. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice.
