Are You Going to College With Disabilities?
Your disability won't stop you. You can go to college. In fact, more students with disabilities are attending college today than ever before.
Every college has services for disabled students and will work with you to make your experience as stress-free and successful as possible.
Here's what you should do if you're disabled:
- Work closely with your high school counselor to plan for college. Know your legal rights and responsibilities as a disabled person.
- When applying to schools, learn what accommodations they have to meet your specific needs. Visit the campus to see what they offer when you've narrowed your choices down.
- You don't have to identify yourself as a student with a disability in the admissions process unless you want to or are applying to a special program for students with disabilities.
- Once you're admitted, make an appointment with the Office of Disability Services or your college's disability coordinator to discuss your needs. Be proactive and advocate for yourself.
